To Grip or Not to Grip: Why Winter Tires Matter in Manitoba

Winter driving in Manitoba is often affected by snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. Roads become slippery, and vehicle control is reduced. For these conditions, winter tires are considered essential.

Winter tires are designed with specialized rubber compounds that remain flexible in cold weather. This flexibility allows better traction on icy and snowy surfaces. Stopping distances are shortened, and steering response is improved. Safety is increased when winter tires are installed before temperatures drop below 7°C.

In Manitoba, the importance of winter tires cannot be overstated. Harsh winter conditions are common, and accidents are more likely when vehicles are equipped with summer or all-season tires. Proper tires help prevent skidding and loss of control.

To make winter tires more accessible, the MPI Winter Tire Program has been introduced. Financing is offered at low interest rates for up to $2,000 per vehicle. Costs for tires, rims, and installation can be included. Terms range from one to four years, and payments are withdrawn automatically.

Participation in the program is simple. Eligibility is based on vehicle registration and identification. Details can be confirmed at any of our 29 locations.

However, winter tires are not a complete solution for winter safety. Even with the best traction, dangerous conditions can still lead to accidents. Driving according to road and weather conditions is always recommended. Speeds should be reduced, and extra space should be left between vehicles. If travel is not necessary during severe weather, staying home is the safest choice. Risk is minimized when caution is prioritized.

To grip or not to grip — the choice is yours. Prepare now. Install winter tires before the first snowfall, and drive smart this winter.
